Eagles Drop Match to UT-Arlington, 4-1

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Georgia Southern men's tennis team (7-8, 1-3 SBC) fell to the UT-Arlington Mavericks (12-9, 1-3 SBC) 4-1 Sunday afternoon in Texas. The Eagles will turn their focus to a two-match weekend in Boca Raton next week.

The doubles matches began the day, and the Eagles jumped on top of the Mavericks from the get-go. Pol del Castillo and Alex Suk in the No. 2 position defeated their opponents 6-3, and Tao Castillo and Jacob Mitchell in the No. 3 position defeated their opponents 6-3, clinching the doubles point for the Eagles. Alexandros Roumpis and Valentin Dun were in a 4-3 match with their opponent before the match was called off.

In the singles matches, the Mavericks turned things around and jumped on the Eagles. Starting at the No. 2 position, Roumpis fell to his opponent by a score of 6-4, 6-4. At the No. 4 position, Dimitris Paliouras pushed his opponent to the brink, but he was bested 6-4, 1-6, 5-7. Del Castillo fell at the No. 1 position, taking the first set but ultimately falling 7-6, 2-6, 2-6. In the final match of the day at the No. 6 position, Laurent Julia Calac took the second set to push his match to a third set, but the Mavericks clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win, with the final two matches called off.

QUOTE FROM COACH BAYON: "We played some very good doubles today and we are improving weekly. The Eagles fought hard in singles but today it was not enough. Going through a tough match like today will make us stronger."

UP NEXT: The Eagles will head back to the Sunshine State to take on 60^th-ranked Florida Atlantic on Saturday, April 2, and Southern Miss on Sunday, April 3. Saturday's match begins at 9 a.m., while Sunday's will start at 11 a.m.
