Eagles Conquer the Trojans, 4-2

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern men's tennis team powered past the Troy Trojans by a score of 4-2 on Sunday at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The doubles matches began with Pol del Castillo and Jacob Mitchell getting off to a hot start at the No. 3 position, and quickly won their match, 6-2, giving the Eagles an advantage in the doubles point. Alexandros Roumpis and Valentin Dun fought in a back-and-forth match at the No. 1 position but emerged victorious to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead on the day. The match at the No. 2 position was called off, but Tao Castillo and Alex Suk were mounting a furious comeback, ending at 5-5 after being down 1-4.
The singles matches began with a fast victory by Castillo at the No. 3 position, earning the Eagles a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. However, the Trojans would fight back to tie things up at 2-2, with victories over Laurent Julia Calac (3-6, 1-6) at the No. 6 position and del Castillo (5-7, 3-6) at the No. 1 position. Alexandros Roumpis would give the Eagles a much-needed point at the No. 2 position, winning his match 6-3, 7-5. The final two matches were stretched to three sets, with Dimitris Paliouras at No. 4 and Valentin Dun at No. 5 trying to keep the Eagles ahead. Both matches were evenly matched the whole way, but Paliouras was able to power past his opponent to give the Eagles the 4-2 win with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory.

UP NEXT: The Eagles will hit the road for a pair of Sun Belt matches, starting at Louisiana on March 25, and facing UT-Arlington on March 27.
