ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Georgia Southern men's golf team shot 8-under in the second round of the Spartan Collegiate, the second-best team score of the tournament, to move up four spots into third after 36 holes at the Sea Island Golf Club Plantation Course Monday.
The Eagles (-5) are a stroke back of Notre Dame (-6) and tournament host Michigan State and three ahead of Northwestern (-2) and Iowa, which are tied for fourth.
Brett Barron carded 70-70=140 (-4) and is tied for second, and
Jake Maples posted 73-70=143 (-1) and is tied for 15th.
Mason Williams posted a 68 in the second round, the fourth-lowest score of the day.
Avery Price shot a 72 in the first round, and
Ben Carr notched a 72 in the second.
Williams started the second round with six straight pars and finished the day by making birdie on five of his last six holes, including four straight on holes 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Barron made four birdies in the first round with three coming on 14, 16 and 18 as the senior wound up shooting 33 on the side, and he made five birdies in the second round to move to 4-under for the tournament. Maples played the first six holes of the second round 3-under and finished the day with seven consecutive pars.
