Georgia Southern Athletics Set To Host Eagle Extravaganza

Full week of virtual events and challenges scheduled
STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern Athletics Department is set to put on Eagle Extravaganza, hosting several virtual events and creating engaging challenges for its fans. The fun will kick off Thursday and will run through Wednesday, April 29.
"As first responders and people all across the country continue to help combat the spread of COVID-19, Eagle Extravaganza is an opportunity to bring the Eagle Nation together as we remain physically apart" director of athletics Jared Benko said. "This special week of programming gives Eagle Nation a chance to relive some of its greatest moments in our history. These moments can now be shared and new memories can be created with family members. The strength of Eagle Nation is its members, and it is now more important than ever that we rally together to support each other, our state, and all those in Eagle Nation."
The extravaganza begins with the NFL Draft as several Eagles should be taken with more expected to sign as free agents. The Draft goes from Thursday through Saturday and during that time, Georgia Southern Athletics will honor some of its previous draftees on social media and will then have exclusive Zoom interviews with the newest members of the Eagle Draft Club.
On Friday, which as always is True Blue Friday, a Zoom interview with GS head volleyball coach Chad Willis along with middle blocker Baylor Bumford will be posted as the two talk about a myriad of fun topics. We'll also post a video of new director of athletics Jared Benko calling donors as part of his open door initiative.
Saturday is track & field's virtual Senior Day as we honor the two seniors. For Strength Saturday, Don Day will take us into the kitchen for some healthy cooking tips and we'll also reveal the football promotions for the South Alabama game on Oct. 31.
The men's golf team will hold its virtual Senior Day on Sunday as the program honors its four seniors.
On Sunday at 2 p.m., Eagle fans will be able to rewatch the baseball team's March 11 victory over No. 3 Georgia with special commentary from head coach Rodney Hennon via True Blue Live on GSEagles.com. Fans will be able to relive one of the most memorable games in GS baseball history as the Eagles completed the season series sweep with a 6-1 win in front of a packed house at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Prior to the game, a special compilation of virtual first pitches, sponsored by Chick-fil-a of Statesboro, will be released on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram from the videos sent in by fans.
The third annual GUSPY Awards will take place virtually this year. On Monday night at 7 p.m., Georgia Southern Athletics will celebrate the best-of-the-best in athletics, academics, leadership and service. GUSPY award nominations are submitted by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, coaches and staff. Winners are determined by a vote of selected groups for each award and the winners will be announced Monday night through the YouTube broadcast.
The extravaganza will roll further on Tuesday with the first Tuesday Talk on Facebook Live at 5 p.m. as director of athletics Jared Benko will sit down with head football coach Chad Lunsford (six feet apart of course). Fans will be able to submit questions to the duo both ahead of time and during the broadcast. The session will be shown on the GS Athletics Facebook page.
We'll wrap up the week of events on Wednesday at 5 p.m. as we replay men's basketball's heart-stopping comeback win over Louisiana in the Sun Belt Tournament as Danny Reed sits down with Ike Smith for behind-the-scenes commentary.
