COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Georgia Southern men's basketball guard Ike Smith is a recipient of the 2020 All-American Athlete Award, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) announced today.
The award recognizes Smith's athletic accomplishments and his dedication to strength and conditioning. He was nominated by assistant director of strength and conditioning David Kitchen.
"We are proud to have David Kitchen join the NSCA in its mission to safely improve athletic performance," says Eric McMahon, NSCA's Coaching Program Manager. "Supporting our student-athletes like Ike Smith guarantees a stronger future for the NSCA."
Smith was named All-Sun Belt and NABC All-District in his redshirt senior season after coming back from an injury that caused him to miss 23 games in 2018-19. He ranked 10th in the Sun Belt in scoring (14.1 ppg) and 18th in rebounding (5.5/gm) and scored in double figures in 24 games, including 20-plus points seven times. Smith ranks second on the Georgia Southern Division I scoring list (1,931 points) and 16th on the Sun Belt career scoring list and he ranks 10th at GS in rebounds (668). He was named Sun Belt Player of the Week Dec. 30.
GS tallied 20-plus wins for the third straight season, a feat not accomplished since 1986-89, and the Eagles advanced to their conference tournament semifinal round for the third straight season, the first time that has happened in program history.
