Georgia Southern picks up three wins
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern rifle team picked up three wins Sunday, downing VMI, the VMI women's squad and Plattsbugh State. The match was conducting virtually to help with social distancing and to reduce travel costs. Georgia Southern posted its highest score of the season, hitting the 4,535 team aggregate mark. While the individual and team results do not count toward NCAA qualification status, the results do count in the team results both overall and in SoCon action.
In smallbore, the team posted a 2,230 which is the third-highest score in program history. Freshman Brianne Staton placed first with a 565 while Kinsley Hannon (career-high 561; 3rd), Ashley Judson (552; 5th), Amelia Pierce (542; 8th), Gabby Morrow (539; 10th) and Erin Ballard (525; 14th) shot solid numbers for the Eagles.
In air rifle, Judson and Hannon led the way with a 579, but Judson took first with one more center shot than Hannon (30-29). For Hannon, it was a career-high effort. Staton took third with a career-high 578 while Herring (569; 4th), Ballard (563; 6th), Amy Visconti (559; 10th), Anna Mayo (career-high 557; 12th) and Morrow (555; 14th) also shot for the Eagles.
Staton led the Eagles with a career-high 1,143 to take her first collegiate win. Hannon placed second with a career-high 1,140 and Judson completed the medal sweep with a 1,131. Herring placed fifth with a 1,120 and Morrow also finished in the top 10 with a 1,094 to place 10th.
Words From Coach Worman:
"I'm very proud of the whole team. They are continuing to evolve and mature in their mental game, as well as in the mechanics of their positions and their equipment. They are ahead of schedule as it relates to where I thought they'd be, and that goes for both the freshmen and the sophomores. All the hard work and commitment is shining through.
"We had some hectic developments as it related to the electronic targets, but the team handled the random raising or lowering of targets after each 10 shot strings like true professionals. Also, I was grateful for the lean-in attitude the athletes who were not competing did to help make the match run as smoothly as possible."
