STATESBORO - The annual Night of Champions is a big one this year as Georgia Southern Athletics will honor 17 teams from Georgia Southern and Armstrong State crowned as champions during their time on campus. The department honors teams on the fifth, 10th, 20th, 30th and 40th anniversary of their accomplishment. This will be the first season that both university's proud pasts are recognized on the same evening.
Highlighting this year's celebration are two football national championships. The 1989 team, which was the first NCAA Division I football team to ever go 15-0, is celebrating its 30th anniversary, while the 1999 team that claimed a title with a dominating win over Youngstown State in the finals, is back for its 20th anniversary. Also being recognized are both the 2009 women's tennis and men's tennis teams won NCAA Division II national titles.
Thirteen other programs that won conference or regional titles will also be recognized.
