Maine comes to town next weekend for home opener
BATON ROUGE, La. - The sixth-ranked LSU Tigers raced out to three first quarter touchdowns en route to a 55-3 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday night in front of 97,240 fans at Tiger Stadium in both team's season opener.
Key Moment: Trailing 14-0 in the first quarter, quarterback Shai Werts was sacked and fumbled the ball deep in the Eagles' territory. It was Werts' first lost fumble in 295 carries going back to the Arkansas State in 2017. LSU went on to score its third touchdown of the quarter to gain control of the game.

• LSU took the opening drive down the field and punched in the first score of the game when Joe Burrow connected with Ja'Marr chase from 13 yards out. LSU 7, GS 0
• Justin Jefferson scored the Tigers' third touchdown of the first quarter when he caught a 9-yard pass from Burrow. LSU 21, GS 0
• Burrow tossed his fourth touchdown pass of the first half with just under 10 minutes left in the second quarter, hitting Jacob Phillips for a 3-yard touchdown pass. LSU 35, GS 0
• The Eagles put their best drive of the game together with Justin Tomlin behind center, which was capped by a 47-yard field goal from senior All-American Tyler Bass. It was his 20th career field goal of 40 yards or longer. LSU 35, GS 3
Key Stat: Georgia Southern set a new FBS record with just five turnovers in 13 games last year but turned the ball over twice in this first game alone, leading to 14 points for the Tigers.
Of Note: Junior linebacker Rashad Byrd posted a career-high 16 tackles, blowing past his career high of nine set last year at Clemson.
Up Next: The Eagles (0-1) are scheduled to open up their home portion of the slate a week from today, hosting Maine (1-0) at Allen E. Paulson Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7 in a game that will start at 6 p.m.
