Fans encouraged to participate at Paulson Stadium
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern Athletics Department, in consultation with the school's mental health professionals and the requests of the Eagle football squad, has released its plans to raise awareness for suicide prevention and to honor the life of the late Jordan Wiggins at Saturday's football game against New Mexico State, which kicks off at 3 p.m.
Following are the plans:
• A suicide prevention awareness sticker will be placed on the backs of the Georgia Southern helmets while the staff will be wearing the purple and turquoise ribbons. Purple and turquoise are the two colors used for suicide prevention awareness;
• The Eagle players will use purple mouth guards in lieu of their normal ones;
• At the 78-minute mark on the pre-game clock (1:47 p.m.), the team will gather in the end zone by its locker room to celebrate the life of Wiggins, a freshman offensive lineman who wore No. 78 for the Eagles. Gates open to Allen E. Paulson Stadium at 1:30 p.m. and fans are encouraged to enter at that time to join the team by gathering in Section O. No fans will be allowed on the field. Patrons who enter the stadium for this celebration must have their valid game ticket scanned upon entry. They may leave the stadium and collect a voucher at Gate 9 ONLY up to the 70-minute mark on the clock, which allows for re-entry at any gate with both the scanned game ticket and voucher. No vouchers permitting re-entry will be accepted after the conclusion of the game's first quarter;
• Stickers replicating the ribbons adorned by the team will be handed out by Georgia Southern student-athletes and staff at the gates, as well as the student entrance. These supplies will be limited and fans are also encouraged to bring their own ribbons made at home;
• Finally, a moment of silence will be observed prior to the national anthem to recognize all those who have been affected by suicide.
