STATESBORO - The offense put up four touchdowns and
Tyler Bass drilled two field goals in the second and final full preseason scrimmage for the Georgia Southern football team, held Friday afternoon at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.
"I saw a lot of improvement from the first scrimmage to today," said head coach
Chad Lunsford. "We had to fight through adversity with weather and some other factors but we didn't lose our composure. We were competitive on both sides of the ball. The offense threw a punch with a big play and the defense got mad and responded by getting fired up and making a play. There was a lot of energy and juice out there, which I like. It's coming together but we're not quite there yet. The good news is we still have two weeks to get it fine-tuned for South Carolina State."
Bass opened the scoring with field goals of 41 and 30 yards before the offense found the end zone.
Monteo Garrett scampered in from 6 yards out on fourth and goal. Later on,
Jared Daniels took a pitch from
Justin Tomlin and galloped the far sideline 60 yards for a touchdown.
Kado Brown later hit a streaking
Davarius Bargnare down the middle for a 49-yard touchdown pass and
Wesley Kennedy III finished off the scoring with a 16-yard score on an option pitch from
Shai Werts.
Rashad Byrd and
Javon Reid both recorded interceptions for the defense.
The offense picked up 368 yards of total offense, 241 on the ground and 127 through the air.
Logan Wright had a scrimmage-high 13 carries for 50 yards while
Monteo Garrett racked up 51 yards on seven carries. Daniels had 59 yards on two carries. Werts threw for 68 yards with no interceptions.
Colby Ransom had two catches for 43 yards, including a 34-yarder from Werts, and Bargnare had the 49-yard touchdown catch.
The Eagles will continue preparations for the Sept. 1 opener with one more week of practice before switching to game-week mode on Sunday, Aug. 26.
Todd Bradley Update From Coach Lunsford:
"Linebacker
Todd Bradley underwent a successful meniscectomy in his left knee Thursday through Optim Orthopedics. He has already begun rehabilitation and we hope to get him back on the practice field in the near future."
