Throughout preseason football camp, GSEagles.com will take you on a behind-the-scenes look at different aspects of the football program that go beyond the practice field. In today's installment, we check in with Quarterbacks coach, Juston Wood.
Q: Which of the young guys from last year are you most excited to see back in action?
JW: Shai Werts
Q: Tell us about this year's Quarterbacks.
JW: As a group, it is a fun group of kids to work with. Very hungry to be complete quarterbacks. Guys who want to work at the position and very committed and hungry to have success, not as individuals but as a team. Just guys that are really hungry to be coached.
Q: How is Shai Werts coming along? How comfortable is he with the new offense?
JW: I think his comfort is growing everyday. He is being asked to do a lot of the same things. I think a lot of the learning curve is in new vocabulary, new terminology, and higher standards as far as precision of the offense and what is asked out of that position. I think he is really growing in his understanding of the why we do certain things. Fundamentally, he is really making strides everyday. I think the biggest thing as he gets more confident in what he is doing he is assuming more of a leadership roles that is required for the quarterback position. I think as he gets more comfortable you will really start to see him fleurish. He wants to be that complete guy. Not just when he is playing but what he brings to the team as a leader.
Q: Who has been a summer standout?
JW: I think really the whole group of quarterbacks had a good summer. I know Shai probably put in the most out of anybody and that is probably going to show in terms of his confidence and his performance as we get into the season.
Q: Senior LaBaron Anthony was just awarded a full scholarship. What does that say about his work ethic and what he has done here at Georgia Southern.
JW: It's a great story as far as perseverance goes. He has had four different position coaches, four different offenses, four different systems and when you're walk on, and every time someone new comes in your start over, that can be a really big challenge. It is tough reproving yourself every time. I'm really excited for him and proud him. I think it's a great example of what it means to persevere and to continue to do whatever you can with the opportunities you are given. I think it also shows how important the group of people he is around. Through the tough times, he has continued to stick with it and fight the fight. It speaks tremendously about the brotherhood, how guys can make it through some of those things.
