Georgia Southern Announces Two Future Non-Conference Football Opponents

Eagles will host Gardner-Webb University, The Citadel in coming years
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein announced Wednesday the addition of Gardner-Webb University and The Citadel for the 2021 and 2023 seasons, respectively. The Eagles will host the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs on Sept. 4, 2021 and the Citadel Bulldogs on Sept. 2, 2023 at Allen E. Paulson Stadium in Statesboro.
Georgia Southern and Gardner-Webb have met once before in 2002 when the Eagles dominated the Bulldogs 52-0. The Bulldogs, who compete in the Big South Conference, went 1-10 last season.
Georgia Southern and The Citadel have a long history as rivals in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern is 19-5 all-time against The Citadel. Georgia Southern has not played The Citadel since 2015, when the Eagles topped the Bulldogs 48-13.
The Citadel, who competes in the Southern Conference (SoCon), went 5-6 last season, finishing sixth in its conference.
Georgia Southern joined the SoCon in 1991, winning 10 conference championships during its time in the conference.
