Breida, Koo make team as undrafted free agents
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern football fans will be busy on Sundays this fall trying to keep up with all of the #EaglesInThePros as a program-best six former players made initial 53-man rosters of NFL squads.
Three rookies made squads while three veterans made their team.
One of the hardest thing to do in the league is make the team as an undrafted free agent as a rookie and the Eagles had two of them in Matt Breida and Younghoe Koo. Breida is expected to be the No. 2 running back behind Carlos Hyde in San Francisco while Younghoe Koo won a tight kicking battle over incumbent Josh Lambo for the Los Angeles Chargers job.
Also making their respective squads were Edwin Jackson (Indianapolis), Jerick McKinnon (Minnesota) and J.J. Wilcox (Tampa Bay). Rookie Ukeme Eligwe, who was a fifth-round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs, made the roster as well. BJ Johnson III injured his hamstring early in preseason camp, but is on the injured reserve list for the 49ers.
Three players who were in camp were released: Montay Crockett (Green Bay), Ironhead Gallon (Arizona) and Antwione Williams (Detroit). While the six players made the initial 53-man roster of their repsective teams, nothing is set in stone as teams can still make moves and transactions after over 1,000 players from across the league were released or waived.
UPDATE: J.J. Wilcox was traded to Pittsburgh on Sunday
