Freshman in a battle for playing time at quarterback
Following practice, GSEagles.com had a chance to catch up with redshirt freshman quarterback Shai Werts, who is battling for the starting spot behind center.
Q: Coming off your redshirt season what is the biggest thing you want to improve on this spring?
A: Heading into the spring, I felt like I needed to be more of a vocal leader; last year I didn't have to be in that role. This year I just need to be more vocal and be a better leader overall.
Q: What is it like battling with Seth Shuman for the quarterback position this spring?
A: It's just like competing with everything else. We both come out every day working hard and trying to do everything right and we enjoy it.
Q: How do you think you developed during your redshirt season?
A: I took a lot of things in from Kevin and Favian just learning the game. I traveled to every game so I got that game type atmosphere, what's it like and speed of the game.
Q:After being redshirted last season, how do you feel being able to showcase your talents in front of Eagle Nation on Saturday?
A: Of course it's a lot more people than high school, but I am just going to come out play and do what I have to do to help lead my team to victory. We've been working hard to get better and I really feel like this year is going to be good for us.
Q: What was your favorite football memory growing up?
A: Playoff game my senior season. I threw three touchdowns and ran for two, which was probably one of my best games.
Q: If you were on an island and could only bring three things what would they be?
A: My cell phone so that I could leave when I was ready to go, peanut butter and jelly, and a football to entertain myself.
