Men's Tennis beat Jacksonville State and SCAD on Sunday, Nicholls State on Friday
STATESBORO, Ga.- Going 3-0 this weekend, the Georgia Southern men's tennis team boasts an 8-3 season record after defeating Nicholls State on Friday and Jacksonville State and SCAD on Sunday, all at home. Sunday's doubleheader consisted of a near Eagle sweep in singles, as the Blue and White won 11 of 12 matches.
"The guys played well today. They fought hard. Not all the guys brought their A-game today, but they managed to fight," head coach Sander Koning said. "Overall, I'm happy with the weekend (going) 3-0 and being undefeated at home."
Although the team dropped the doubles point against the Gamecocks in the morning, the Eagles won all of their singles matches to take the 6-1 lead. Freshman Andre Johnson started the trend, as he soared to a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No.6 position. Sophomore JC Alcala and junior Dani Casablancas also finished up business early winning 6-3, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-3 respectively.
With the Eagles ahead 3-1, they only needed one more singles victory to take the match. However, the final three matches were back-and-forth battles, all ending in three sets.
"What we've been seeing throughout the season is that guys help each other out a lot on the courts. They look at each other and see the guy next to them fighting which keeps them up and going," Koning said. "I think that's very important; we have good chemistry going on and hopefully we continue that throughout the season."
Sophomore Eddie Landin won it for the Eagles with his 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory at line three, while senior Rise Lanne (No.1) and freshman Ze Moya (No.4) also found success to leave Georgia Southern unblemished in singles.
Later on Sunday, the Blue and White took on SCAD which also ended 6-1 in Georgia Southern's favor. The Eagles won their first doubles point at home with the help of doubles duo Nico de Groof and Ze Moya (No.2) and the line three tandem, Landin and Alcala.
"We had a short break before playing SCAD, but the guys were ready to play and that's really what it comes down to especially in doubleheaders," Koning said. "It was important to keep our focus and keep challenging ourselves."
In singles, the Eagles again secured some quick victories. Landin and Moya were the first two off the courts, both winning in straight sets to extend the lead to 3-0.
"If guys get off the court quickly, that keeps our momentum going and that's what we saw today," Koning said.
Lanne recorded his second clinch of the weekend, beating Daiki Naka 6-4, 6-4 to earn the fourth point for Georgia Southern. He also clinched Friday's 4-1 match against Nicholls State.
To round out singles play, de Groof fell 4-6, 6-7 but Alcala squared away the weekend with a line two, three-set victory.

QUOTABLES FROM COACH KONING
The first match was a tough match against Jacksonville State. We lost the doubles point and then we had to get up for singles and they did. They came out confident. Andre (Johnson) made sure to crush any momentum that Jacksonville State had because he got off the court so fast. I'm really happy for Rise (Lanne). He played a tough opponent with a big serve. He didn't break his opponent's serve until the tiebreaker in the second set and then cruised through the third set. Like I said before, a lot of good fight.
