2017 campaign includes 12 home matches
STATESBORO, Ga. – As we head into the winter the men's tennis team will be putting their final preparations on the upcoming 2017 season. Head coach Sander Koning will enter his third season at Georgia Southern posting a 21-19 record. The 2017 regular-season schedule features 29 matches with 12 of them being home contests.
"We are looking forward to the spring season," said head coach Sander Koning. "We had a relatively good fall and we want to continue that momentum into the spring semester. We have a lot of competitive players and it is the first time I have had such depth in the team. Many over our players could play in the lineup and that is a luxury to have. It is good that we do have so many good players, because our schedule is tougher than last year and we play more matches as well. Throughout the season we will be looking to improve every match and the goal is to have the same mindset going into every match. This will give us the best chances to win and do well this season."
Included in the 29 opponents the Eagles will face this season are six teams that played in the NCAA Tournament during the 2016 season. One of the opponents that they will be competing against, Florida, went to the Quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament before being defeated by the 2016 NCAA Division I champions Virginia 4-0.
Georgia Southern will open up the season on the road against Clemson and the Citadel on January 14th, before traveling south for three matches in the State of Florida in the span of two days. These teams will include the Florida, Florida State, and Florida A&M.
Following the five road matches the Eagles will return home to the Wallis Tennis Center for a match against Alabama State before heading back on the road for a short two match road stint against UT-Chattanooga and Tennessee Tech. The team will then begin their six match home stand on February 11th against Winthrop, UNC-Charlotte, SCAD, Gardner-Webb, ABAC, and Stetson.
The Eagles will cap off February with a trip to Mercer on the 23rd, and return home for a three match home stand. The home stand will include Kennesaw State, Bethune-Cookman, and East Carolina University.
To finish off the regular season the Eagles will begin an eight match road stretch which will begin on March 11th against Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word the following day. To open up Sun Belt play the Eagles will face off against UT-Arlington before traveling to UAB, Troy, Georgia State, UNC-Greensboro, and Appalachian State.
The final match of the regular season and Senior Day for the men's tennis team will be held on April 15th against Coastal Carolina. The 2017 Sun Belt Conference Championships will be held from April 20th until the 23rd in New Orleans, Louisiana, on the City Park Tennis Courts.
