STATESBORO, Ga. – It was a bit of a scramble for Willie Fritz and his coaching staff when they arrived in Statesboro in January of 2014.
Shoring up their first recruiting class was high on the to-do list, followed by figuring out how to evaluate current personnel and install new schemes on offense, defense and special teams in just 15 spring practices.
Suffice to say that by the time fall camp rolled around, much of the playbook had yet to be installed and run, rep after rep, to the precision Fritz and his staff demand. After a full season and another spring and summer, the circumstances are different in 2015.
"I feel like we're picking up where we left off," said sophomore running back LA Ramsby. "I think we have pretty much all the playbook in by now. We probably have a few more tags to add, but we have a lot in."
"We had the 15 spring practices and in the summer, we're allowed two hours a week in meetings and you can come out and do some things with them, provided there's not a football," said Fritz. "So when fall camp comes around, your kids already know what you are doing and the system."
During fall camp, the Eagles break for lunch after morning practices and then have special teams meetings in the afternoon. After dinner, the team gathers for a meeting before breaking off into position groups for more seminars. There, they watch film from morning practice, breaking down what was right and what was wrong. Then, they head out to Paulson Stadium at night to install the next day's plays and schemes for 45 minutes or so.
"NFL teams have been doing it that way for years, and college teams have started doing it within the last five years," said Fritz.
How deep into the playbook the Eagles will delve in the season opener at West Virginia remains to be seen, but the entire playbook will be available.
"By the end of this week, we'll have 95 percent of our playbook in offensively, defensively and in the kicking game, and then we'll tweak things each week based on our opponent," said Fritz.
Thursday's practice is slated for 8:15 a.m. on the banks of Beautiful Eagle Creek. Dates, times and locations of football practices are subject to change and may be impacted by weather conditions. Practices are open to the public, but any filming, recording or photography is limited to members of the media only.
Georgia Southern won the 2014 Sun Belt title in its first season in the league, finishing 8-0 in the conference and 9-3 overall. The Eagles return 58 lettermen and 13 starters to the 2015 squad, were picked to win the Sun Belt in the league's preseason coaches' poll and are receiving votes in the USA Today Amway Top-25 Coaches Poll.
Fans can purchase 2015 season tickets and select their seats online, by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS or by visiting the ticket office in the Cowart Building adjacent to Paulson Stadium (203 Lanier Drive).
