VIDEO: Coach Fritz Speaks to Media | Buy season tickets | 2015 Schedule
MACON, Ga. – Georgia Southern football coach Willie Fritz addressed members of the media at the 14th annual Pigskin Preview at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Tuesday morning.
The event is an assembly of football coaches from every college program across the state, which offers them a chance to visit with media members. After opening remarks and talking about the Eagles' 2015 schedule, Fritz took questions and was available for 1-on-1 interviews.
He mentioned how challenging the Eagles' schedule is and that one of the team's goals this year is to be eligible for a bowl game. The Eagles were 9-3 and would have been bowl eligible last season but were in their second season of the transition period.
"We're guaranteed to play 12 games next season, and one of our goals is to play a 13th ball game," said Fritz. "From what I have seen out of Eagle Nation, if we get to a bowl game, we're going to travel. I really believe we'll bring 15,000 or 20,000 people to a bowl game. We have to do our part. We have to play extremely well this season and accomplish our goal."
One of the keys to the offense this season will be the play of the offensive line, which lost four seniors to graduation.
"Hopefully it won't affect the offense," said Fritz. "We led the nation last year in rushing yards per game, and a big part of that was our offensive line. We had four senior starters on the offensive line and one of them, Garrett Frye, is with the Kansas City Chiefs right now. So, we lost some really good players, but it is an opportunity for guys to step up and compete and play."
Georgia Southern learned its season opener against West Virginia will be played on television under the lights of Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown Saturday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net (FSN) and ROOT SPORTS – Pittsburgh. It will be Georgia Southern's first meeting against West Virginia and the Eagles' first matchup against a Big 12 opponent.
The Eagles won the 2014 Sun Belt title in their first season in the league, finishing 8-0 in the conference and 9-3 overall. Georgia Southern returns 58 lettermen and 13 starters to the 2015 squad.
