STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern University President Dr. Brooks Keel hosted the Eagle football team in his home Thursday evening to celebrate the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Title.
Keel and First Lady Dr. Tammie Schalue started the tradition of holding a reception for Georgia Southern's championship winning teams a couple years ago. The football Eagles took a break from spring practice to enjoy great food and friendship in celebrating last year's Sun Belt championship, which they achieved in their first year in the league.
"It's a huge honor for us," said Georgia Southern coach Willie Fritz. "There are not a whole lot of presidents who do that so we appreciate that. It'll be a neat deal – fun and another chance for us to grow closer as a football team."
Georgia Southern claimed the conference crown by going a perfect 8-0 in the league. Eleven Eagle student-athletes earned all-league honors following the historic inaugural season, and Fritz was named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
The Eagles return 58 lettermen to the 2015 team, including five starters on offense and eight on the defensive side of the ball. Georgia Southern is slated to hold spring practice Friday and Saturday to finish out the second week of spring practice.
The Blue and White Spring Game is scheduled for April 18 at 1 p.m. in Paulson Stadium. Admission and parking are free.
