Athletics Honors Academic Achievements at Banquet

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Athletics and Student-Athlete Services hosted the Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet tonight, Tuesday, April 14 at the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center.
The banquet honored the 2014 Eagle Honor Roll and presented the All-Academic Team Awards and the Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year.
Brooke Red (Softball) and David Vargus (Men's Soccer) were named the Female and Male Scholar Athletes of the Year, respectively.
The two were chosen by a vote of the University Athletic Committee and were selected on a combination of academic, athletic, leadership and community service accomplishments.
The other nominees were Kathryn Merson (Women's Soccer), Ashleigh Rasheed (Women's Track), Kym Coley (Volleyball), Amber Juncker (Swimming and Diving), Anna Claire Knight (Women's Basketball), Chase Griffin (Baseball), Matt Dobson (Football) and Zach Altany (Men's Basketball).
Eagles from each team that posted the highest GPA on the squad after sixty hours at Georgia Southern were named to the All-Academic Team.
The team consisted of Marla Thompson (Softball), Mary P. Smith (Women's Tennis), Chase Griffin (Baseball), Anna Claire Knight (Women's Basketball), Zach Altany (Men's Basketball), Albert Codina Sala (Men's Tennis), David Vargus (Men's Soccer), Kym Coley (Volleyball), James Dean (Football), William Evans (Men's Golf), Stephanie Gretto (Women's Soccer), Caitlin Tongco (Women's Soccer), Amber Juncker (Swimming and Diving), Ashleigh Rasheed (Track and Field) and Ale Shortridge (Rifle).
The Eagles also had 134 honorees on the honor roll for making a GPA of 3.0 or above, recognized the group at the banquet and presented them with special Adidas gear.
