The Georgia Southern football team crossed the bridge over Beautiful Eagle Creek to the practice fields a few minutes before 4 p.m. and never stopped moving through a two-hour practice, their first of the Spring, Wednesday afternoon.
Dressed in shorts, jerseys and helmets, the Eagles stretched, went through position drills, special teams drills, pass skelly and finished with team work in the 25-period practice. There was a hop in the step of both players and coaches as they moved from station to station and drill to drill on a beautiful, sunny afternoon.
"I feel like this was comparable to practice 10 last year – we already have our schemes in, we understand the tempo we're looking for in practice, we understand the drills – there's a lot less explaining and a lot more opportunity to work," said Georgia Southern coach Willie Fritz.
Whereas spring practice last year was more about installing schemes and learning new terminology, this year is about perfecting technique and fundamentals and playing with maximum effort.
"The number one thing I want to coach in practice is effort," said Fritz. "I believe you have to teach guys how to play hard. We want to coach technique, fundamentals and scheme off the tape when we're in meetings, but in practice, I want to see our guys playing like wild maniacs."
Spring practice also gives the Eagles their first chance on the field to show they are ready to step into bigger roles and fill the voids left by departing seniors. Georgia Southern returns five starters on offense and eight on defense from last season's Sun Belt Conference championship team.
"It's always interesting when you lose great players to see who is going to replace those guys," said Fritz. "That's going to be interesting. We'll be able to see that when we get through 15 practices of spring ball."
A Visit From Archie Manning
College Football Hall of Famer and 15-year NFL veteran Archie Manning spent some time with the Georgia Southern football team at the Ted Smith Family Football Center Tuesday afternoon.
Manning spoke to members of the Eagle team and coaching staff for about 40 minutes, sharing stories from his career as well as his famous football sons, Peyton and Eli. He was on campus as part of the University's Leadership Lecture Series, developed to expose students to insights from world-class leaders, and spoke to the campus community, including a number of Georgia Southern student-athletes, Tuesday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.
