STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern student-athletes were on hand in the Performing Arts Center Tuesday night to watch speaker Jake Byczkowski talk about the "Solo Cup Culture," the drinking culture on college campuses.
The speaker was brought to campus by the "Be Well Do Well" initiative, comprised of University Wellness, Health Education & Promotion, Alcohol & Other Drugs, Counseling Center and University Housing, which exists to create and implement interactive programs on the topics of Sexual Assault, Mental Health and Alcohol.
As a 2011 graduate of The Ohio State University, a brother of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and a DJ, Byczkowski understands the college party seen all too well. After putting himself and seeing his friends put themselves in several harmful situations as a direct result of alcohol consumption, he began to question his behavior.
In 2012, he began traveling the country talking about alcohol through healthy humor and relatable stories. Byczkowski creates a platform to converse with students about alcohol with the hope of not leaving them feeling condemned or with a fear of being labeled. He hopes to mobilize students to create a communal movement against alcohol-related harm, covering topics such as bystander intervention and what "problem drinking" really means in order to help students make better choices.
Byczkowski had a special message for student-athletes during the question-and-answer segment when asked what advice he would give student-athletes.
"Student-athletes already have a strong sense of community and they need to utilize that," he said. "They already hold each other accountable on the field, the rink, the court or wherever it is they play. They need to utilize that sense of the community off the field as well, and they need to recognize there are a lot more repercussions for them as well."
