STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Head Football Coach Willie Fritz announced Monday the promotion of Dell McGee as the new assistant head football coach.
McGee joined the Eagles in the spring of 2014 after serving one season as an analyst at Auburn, his alma mater. He is currently in his second season with Georgia Southern as the running back assistant coach. McGee helped the Georgia Southern offense finish the 2014 season as the nation's top rushing team, and the Eagles are leading the country again in 2015.
"It's a huge honor, [I'm] truly blessed and very humbled by Coach Fritz to name me that spot," McGee said.
McGee was a two-year starter and four-year letterwinner at Auburn from 1992-95 and was selected in the fifth round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He remained with the Cardinals until 1998 and went on to play overseas in NFL Europe the following year. McGee concluded the 1999 season with the Detroit Lions.
After finishing his professional career in the NFL, McGee began coaching at the high school level as an assistant coach. From 2005-12, he served as head coach at Columbus-Carver High School and lead the team to an 88-19 overall record and six region championships. In 2011, McGee was selected to coach in the third annual Under Armor High School All-American Game.
"I've been thinking about doing this for quite some time," Fritz said. "Dell, who was a very successful high school coach here in the state of Georgia, has got head coaching aspirations at the college level and everything I've seen of him, I think it's a very legitimate goal. I wanted to help further his career and also help our program by naming him assistant head coach."
