LIVE STATS
The Series
• Despite their proximity Georgia Southern and Georgia State have met just once before with the Eagles winning that lone game 69-31 last season in Atlanta.
• The game was the first Sun Belt Conference contest in GS football history and was the first of eight league wins for the Eagles en route to a 2014 conference title.
Southern vs. State Rivalry Series
• The Georgia Southern Eagles and the Georgia State Panthers go head-to-head in Saturday's football game at Paulson Stadium for a "W" in the Sun Belt Conference and two points added to the winning team's current standing in the Georgia Southern/Georgia State Rivalry Series.
• Both schools announced their participation in the series earlier this season, just one year after competing for the first time in football in the Sun Belt Conference.
• The points-based system encompasses all sports in which the two schools compete against each other through head-to-head match-ups and conference championship finishes. All head-to-head series are worth one total point. However, two points are up for grabs in Saturday's football game, as well as when the teams play each other twice in men and women's basketball, competing for one point per game. Bonus points can be received when the two schools compete against one another in a Sun Belt tournament.
• Georgia State currently leads the rivalry 3-2. Georgia Southern received points from wins in both volleyball and women's soccer.
• Teams also have the opportunity to compete for an additional three points through academic achievement and community service projects. The athletic department with the highest GPA average for the year will receive one point toward the series.
• The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for each school will also select one community service project per semester to compete for the remaining two points.
Senior Day
• Twenty-three seniors will be recognized before the game for their contributions to the GS program. Over the past four seasons, this group has seen the transformation of the program as it has gone from the FCS to now a bowl-eligible FBS squad for the first time in program history.
• These players have been a part of 34 wins, two conference championships, a pair NCAA playoff wins and an NCAA semifinal appearance. They made history with Georgia Southern's first win over an BCS program in 2013, last season with the Eagles' Sun Belt Conference championship and again this year by becoming bowl eligible for the first time.
• The Eagles are 26-4 in designated "Senior" games and have won the past six such contests.
Impressive Offensive Output
• After getting shut out in its opener, Georgia Southern has rushed for 46 touchdowns in the past 10 games. Matt Breida (16) and L.A. Ramsby (11) have combined for 27 of those scores. The Eagles average 6.71 yards per carry, tops in the country and their 46 rushing touchdowns are tied with Navy for the national lead.
• Georgia Southern, which leads the nation with an average of 375.6 yards rushing per game, has averaged 439.8 yards rushing in its eight wins. The Eagles have averaged 205.7 yards in their three losses.
• The average of 375.6 rushing yards per game is currently the 16th-best in NCAA FBS history and the highest since Nebraska averaged 399.8 yards per game in 1995.
• The Eagles have done a good job of controlling the ball this season and stand fourth in the nation in average time of possession with a mark of 33:55 per game.
• Georgia Southern has three of the top single-game rushing totals in the FBS this season: 507 vs. New Mexico State (3rd), 503 vs. Texas State (4th) and 489 vs. South Alabama (7th). Army's 556 yards rushing against Eastern Michigan is the top FBS total in 2015.
Defense Getting It Done, Too
• While the Eagle offense gets most of the headlines, Jack Curtis and his defense is putting together another standout season. A year after producing one of the best defenses in the Sun Belt, the Eagles are again among the class of the conference.
• The GS defense enters the final week of the regular season ranked:
Total Defense (2nd SBC; 13th FBS; 322.2 ypg)
Rushing Defense (2nd SBC; FBS; 25th; 131.2 ypg)
Scoring Defense (2nd SBC; FBS; 35th; 22.3 ppg)
Pass Defense (2nd SBC; FBS; 26th; 191.0 ypg)
Pass Effic. Defense (3rd SBC; FBS; 42nd; 121.2 effic.)
Interceptions (2nd SBC; FBS; 11th; 16)
Opponent 1st Downs (1st SBC; 6th FBS; 16.5 pg)
Home Sweet Home
• Georgia Southern has won 11 straight games at Paulson Stadium. It's tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in stadium history with the record standing at 39 straight from 1997-2001 (FCS record). The Eagles also won 38 games in a row from 1985-1990, 14 in a row from 2010-2012, and 11 in a row from 1990-1991.
