Eagles Look To Get Back To Winning Ways

Texas State comes to town for Thursday night game
The Georgia Southern Eagles will look to rebound from a tough loss last week as they host Texas State in a nationally televised contest on Thursday, Oct. 29. Here's all you need to know about the game:

The Series
• Georgia Southern and Texas State have met just twice on the gridiron with both teams capturing a win.
• Last season, safety Matt Dobson returned an interception 100 yards on the last play of the third quarter to give the Eagles a 28-10 lead, but then GS had to hold on late as the Bobcats scored twice, but an onside kick failed and GS ran out the clock to escape with a 28-25 road win.
• In the only other meeting between the two teams, No. 6 GS traveled to No. 4 TSU for a first-round FCS playoff game in 2005, with the Bobcats rallying to win 50-35.
• This will be the first meeting between the two teams in Statesboro.
Gorilla Alums Meet Again
• Georgia Southern head Coach Willie Fritz and Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione are both natives of Kansas and graduates of Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. The two Gorilla alumni have met twice as head coaches previously: in 2011 with Fritz's Sam Houston State Bearkats taking a 36-14 victory in San Marcos, and last year with the Eagles winning 28-25 in San Marcos, as well.
• Franchione is third among active FBS head coaches in career wins with 212, while Fritz is tied for 12th with 151 NCAA wins, although he has 190 career wins if you count the 39 wins in four seasons at Blinn, a junior college.
Thursday Night Lights
• The Eagles are are 4-2 all-time in games played on Thursdays, including 3-0 at Paulson Stadium on that weeknight. Georgia Southern defeated Appalachian State and Troy last season and battled the elements for the victory over Middle Tennessee State in the 1989 "Hugo Bowl." Coach Willie Fritz is 17-3 as a head coach in Thursday night games.
Halloween Fun
• Georgia Southern will open up its Field ofDreams Screams for youth 12 and under in costume to enjoy during the first quarter of the game. There will also be carnival games and GS student-athletes handing out candy. More information will be released later this week
Tackling for a Cure
• In front of a national audience on ESPNU, the football program will participate in Tackling for a Cure, which is dedicated toward raising money and awareness for Breast Cancer Research and Education.
• Georgia Southern Athletics is partnering with Zeta Tau Alpha in this effort. The sorority will hand out pink ribbons and fans can sign a large pink ribbon in honor of someone they know who has been affected. Fans will have the opportunity at the game to visit one of several tables to donate or purchase items where 100 percent of the proceeds will be given to Breast Cancer Research and Education.
