UAB transfer returns to home state for final year of eligibility
STATESBORO, Ga. – Offensive lineman Roscoe Byrd, from Albany, Ga., will join the Georgia Southern Football program after transferring from UAB this season. The 6-3, 319-lb. Byrd has started in 20 games in his career on the offensive line for the Blazers over the last two seasons and played in 10 games in 2012 as a defensive lineman. He will have one year of eligibility remaining and will be able to compete immediately in accordance with NCAA bylaws in regard to the situation.
Byrd started all 12 games at guard in the 2014 season and eight in 2013 after beginning his career at UAB as a defensive lineman. The Blazers had the No. 37 rushing offense in the nation at nearly 200 yards per game and the offensive line was key in UAB's more than 2,000 total passing yards in 2014. Top-30 national rankings in completion percentage, passing efficiency and passing yards per attempt were also included in the Blazers' 2014 highlights, as well as record-setting efforts in rushing and receiving.
"We are happy Roscoe will have the opportunity to finish out his playing career and excited to have him join our program," said Georgia Southern Head Coach Willie Fritz. "We graduated a number of seniors on the offensive line this fall, and we think he'll be able to provide some experience and assist us in this area."
From Albany, Ga., Byrd played both offensive and defensive line for Coach Felton Williams at Albany High School and earned All-Region I-AA honors at defensive tackle as a senior. Co-captain of the Indians as a junior and senior, he was named to the Albany Herald's All-metro team both those seasons adding all-area honors to his awards list as a senior.
Georgia Southern, the 2014 Sun Belt Conference champions, opens the 2015 season at West Virginia on September 5th, 2015.
