STATESBORO, Ga. - Daniel Casablancas and Christian Kerrigan both reached the semifinals of their respective singles field as the Georgia Southern men's tennis team completed the first day of competition in the 2014-15 season.
The Eagles split the squad in two and competed in both the Seahawk Invitational and Mercer Bear Gridiron Classic.
Casablancas received a bye in his first round and defeated Nic Wilson of Chattanooga 7-5, 6-3 to advanced to the semifinals of the Mercer Bear Gridiron Classic A Singles. Kerrigan defeated Middle Georgia State's Tim Driessen and Georgia College's Anton Waem to reach a semifinals match against Georgia College's Pedro Ecenarro Saturday at 11 a.m.
"Overall our execution was not strong today, but we did a good job tactically of sticking with our areas of focus," Head Coach Nick Zieziula said.
In the Seahawk Invitational rain forced a shortened singles competition, but the Eagles were able to complete a full days worth of doubles competition. Ristomatti Lanne and Kyle Hoffman led 5-4 over Liberty's Egon Samaai and Jorge Azuero but were unable to secure the victory after unforced errors returned the break.
In Flight C Doubles Jose Eduardo Landin Lopez and Albert Codina Sala fell 8-5 to North Carolina Central's tandem of Kineka and Hoyte. The duo rebounded to defeated Liberty's Jason Burgress and Josiah Boda 8-3. Hoffman completed the only singles match of the day for the Eagles and fell 6-3, 6-2 to UNCW's Taylor Cramer.
In other Mercer action, Robbie Thompson defeated Middle Georgia's Austin Ross but lost to Mercer's Arsav Mohanty in the second round. Pradeep Raja also posted a C Singles win over Jake Hicks but fell to Austin Boaz. In doubles Casablancas/Kerrigan lost 8-6 to Yannick Hass and Vincent Castermans of Georgia College.
Competition in both the Mercer Gridiron Classic and the Seahawk Invitational continues tomorrow morning.
