Offense and Defense get into the rhythms of reps
STATESBORO, Ga. – Eagle players working in position groups and on individual drills made preseason camp recognizable with overcast skies and temperatures barely touching the 80s. Georgia Southern spent day three of 2014 preseason camp breaking a sweat, but not subject to the usual heat indexes normally reserved for July and August.
Twenty-eight periods on the schedule Saturday began to see the start of the rhythms of repetition for offense and defense with team work wrapping up the day. The Eagles then headed to Paulson Stadium where they were outnumbered by the Little Eagles waiting anxiously for their arrival. Lunch, special teams meetings, film study, position meetings, dinner and walk through fill the day after practice.
"It's going good so far," said Eagle Head Coach Willie Fritz. "There is still a lot of installation, particularly in the kicking game. Having 15 spring practices and also being able to meet with our guys two hours a week (in the summer), we are way ahead of where we would normally be at this time schematically, different schemes in offense and defense. We still have a way to go in the kicking game, but I'm very pleased with our progress at this point."
Fritz's practice plan builds each day to reach the goals he has set for the team for preseason with 29 NCAA-allowed practices total from July 31st until the season opener August. 30th.
The Eagles are ahead of the curve in 2014, even with a new coaching staff, with the advantage of having the freshmen and transfers attend the second summer school session.
"It's not just football, it's meetings, it's training room procedure, it's going to class, it's strength and conditioning, they are adapting to all aspects of the program," Fritz said. "It helps them to get to know the coaches, the players, they aren't veterans by any stretch of the imagination, but they are getting accustomed to how we do things here at Georgia Southern."
FOOTBALL OPERATIONS CENTER RIBBON CUTTING & TOURS
Georgia Southern University President Brooks Keel and Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein invite Eagle fans to the ribbon cutting for the new Football Operations Center at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 16th. The event will begin prior to the start of the Football team's final scrimmage of preseason camp with time for a self-guided tour of the facility. After the scrimmage, all Georgia Southern fall sports teams will autograph schedule posters on the North Concourse.
MORE THAN 120 "LITTLE EAGLES" AT PAULSON STADIUM TODAY
More than 120 Little Eagles filled the field at Paulson Stadium with Georgia Southern student-athletes Saturday morning and went full speed at six different stations. Children up to 12 years of age expended a ton of energy tackling, throwing, catching and running and then listened to Coach Willie Fritz and Eagle players give pep talks. The event closed with the 2014 Eagle seniors autographing posters for both children and adults alike.
"It is good for our guys just as much as it is for the kids," said Head Coach Willie Fritz. "I want our guys to be positive role models for these young kids and get an opportunity to interact with them. Sometimes these youngsters put them on a pedestal and we need to make sure we are doing things the right way. In addition, this helps promote the game of football… and we want to make sure we help football to continue to grow in popularity."
#TRUEBLUE PARENT
Registration for the Little Eagles Camp was to close at midnight Friday, but the form was still available online at GSEagles.com in the early morning hours. That extra time allowed for one parent to submit the registration form for their child at three in the morning. That definitely exemplifies #TrueBlue.
