Coordinators exchange ideas and information to make team better
STATESBORO, Ga. – Meteorology impacted Georgia Southern's intentions on having a two-a-day Tuesday as thunderstorms in the area postponed the second practice at Paulson Stadium. The unpredictable storm cells forced the Eagles indoors for meetings and film review. Afterward, members of the coaching staff spent time drawing up plays, reviewing the practice plan for Wednesday and discussing the remaining installation schedules.
"We had a plan for this evening, but with the weather sometimes you have to be able to adjust and improvise, and we didn't' want to go out there, start practice and then have to cancel practice," said Defensive Coordinator Jack Curtis. "It's better for us to go two practices tomorrow. We can take advantage of not having a time limit right now, so we had an extra-long meeting and took the opportunity to cover a little more and install a little bit more for what is going in the next day."
Curtis and Offensive Coordinator Doug Ruse reunited on the Georgia Southern staff when new Eagle Head Coach Willie Fritz retained Curtis as defensive coordinator and hired Ruse earlier this year. Curtis and Ruse worked together from 1994 through 2001 at Northwestern State and then at Arkansas State from 2002-2008. The 2014 season will mark their 16th season coaching together.
"When you work with someone, there's give and take and you do whatever is best for the football team," Curtis said. "We can't be selfish and just do something for the offense or something for the defense. It helps when you try and help others. We don't want to have a lot of surprises (in practice) and don't want to give something to the offense they aren't prepared for, and vice versa. We want to go over the installation in the meetings, walk through it, and we want to practice it first and make sure we are well schooled on it."
Ruse echoes the sentiment of Curtis. While the time on the field is critical, meeting time, for the Eagles, as well as for the Eagle coordinators, has value as well.
"The good thing about this is that classes haven't started yet, so we have some flexibility in the schedule and we had some good quality meeting time tonight," said Offensive Coordinator Doug Ruse.
With all the change that has come to the Georgia Southern Football program, the familiarity of the coordinators has already been an advantage for the Eagles.
"We know each other's installation schedule and know how fast we put things in," Ruse said. "Both the offensive and defensive staffs work very well together and there has to be some planning on both sides of the ball so things you are installing are compatible and you can got out there and have a practice that both sides are prepared for."
