NEW ORLEANS – Coach Willie Fritz started the day with a radio interview and ended Sun Belt Media Day 2014 with a radio interview, with plenty of talking about Georgia Southern in between. Coach Fritz, Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein and senior Eagle Football student-athletes handled media responsibilities Tuesday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome as Georgia Southern participated in its first media day as a full member of the Sun Belt Conference.
More than 50 media members gathered in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Tuesday to hear from the league's 11 football coaches, student-athletes and administrators from each program. Georgia Southern begins its 2014 season at N.C. State on August 30th. The Eagles report back to campus July 30th after summer term B ends this Thursday. Georgia Southern begins practice on July 31st.
"This was a very exciting day and we met with a lot of media members and had a lot of fun spreading the word about Georgia Southern as a member of the Sun Belt Conference,' said Coach Willie Fritz. "Quite a few schools know our history and success, I know a few of the coaches and there is a lot that's new, new stadiums, new teams, new rivalries. I think both Garrett and Edwin are ready to start after media day today."
Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson delivered a "State of the Conference" address, recapping the league's most successful football season to date and laying the foundation for the future with an expansive media partnership with the ESPN family of networks and digital access. Benson also commented on the opportunities for four bowl bids as well as its bowl consortium for opportunities for two others for the Sun Belt Conference.
In another landmark move, Benson announced a joint program for officiating between the Sun Belt and Southeastern Conferences to give SBC officials training, teaching and evaluation, to result in a better officiated game.
Seniors Garrett Frye and Edwin Jackson, both named to the Sun Belt preseason all-Conference second team, represented the Eagles in the media sessions and in the first "Sun Belt Social Media Suite." New for 2014 Sun Belt Media Day, the Social Media Suite, with host Danielle Percival, allowed fans to submit questions and follow through the day using the hashtag #SunBeltMediaDay.
The Eagles open the 2014 home season in the newly expanded Paulson Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6th. Season tickets may be purchased online at GSEagles.com/fbtix with reserved Eagle Family Plan tickets starting as low as $150 for two tickets for all five games.
