STATESBORO, Ga. - Maggie Howard, Sierra Kirkland, Hunter Norton, and Favian Upshaw named "Talon-ted" Award winners for the month of March.
The "Talon-ted" Award recognizes students who are working just as hard in the classroom as they are on the field of competition.
Howard, a women's soccer player, has a good balance on her academic and athletic lifestyle. "I manage my time wisely and figure out what things need more time than others." With that mentality, it is no wonder why she has aspirations of pursuing a medical degree. "I'm considering something in pediatrics."
After a tough start to the fall semester, Favian Upshaw has come back focused this spring ready to buckle down. "I put as much effort into my academics as my athletics." With aspirations of working in athletic administration, Upshaw understands the importance of earning a Georgia Southern degree. "The name carries a lot of weight around the country and when I graduate I know that will give me an advantage."
Sierra Kirkland's lifestyle begins and ends with her calendar. "At the beginning of each month, I plan out on my dry-erase calendar everything that needs to be done in class and when I have practices so I know what needs to be done." Working towards becoming an occupational therapist, Kirkland has a powerful person in her corner, and the support is reciprocated. "My mom and I are both enrolled in school so we have to be each other's cheerleader."
A self-motivator, soccer player Hunter Norton chose Georgia Southern because of the degrees offered as well as the resources afforded to him. "The variety of programs offered here and the support offered by the Student-Athlete Services were big factors. They have given me everything I need to be a successful student-athlete."
When it is all said and done for Norton, he hopes to continue working in athletics as well. "I hope to work in athletics either as a coach or in some sort of administrative position. Continuing to work in the field of athletics is a hug aspiration of mine."
