134 Student-Athletes Recognized at Scholar Athlete Banquet

STATESBORO, Ga.- Georgia Southern Athletics and Student-Athlete Services hosted the Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet tonight, Wednesday, April 23rd at the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center.
The banquet honored the 2013 Eagle Honor Roll and Scholar Athletes of the Year. One hundred thirty-four student-athletes qualified for the Honor Roll, and one male and one female were selected as the Scholar Athletes of the Year.
"Tonight's banquet is representative of the first objective in our Departments' Strategic Plan- Academic Distinction," said Athletics Director Tom Kleinlein. "It is important that we celebrate the academic achievements of our student-athletes. Honoring these 134 individuals for achieving a 3.0 cumulative GPA, recognizing the scholar athlete from each sport, and celebrating the Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year is honor and I look forward to each year."
The male nominees for Scholar Athlete of the Year included: Stryker Brown, Baseball; Will Evans, Golf; Hunter Norton, Soccer; Oliver Webb, Tennis; Garrett Frye, Football. The female nominees included: Mimi DuBose, Basketball; Sydnie Van Curen, Soccer; Breigh Findlay, Softball; Megan Ostrom, Swimming and Diving; Paola Garrido, Tennis; Dana Edwards, Track and Field; Lauren LaRocque, Volleyball.
This year, football player Garrett Frye and swimmer Megan Ostrom were chosen as the Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year. The criteria for this award requires that each student-athlete must have completed at least four full time terms at Georgia Southern; they must have earned a varsity letter in their respective sports; and they must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award selection is 50% academic, 30% athletic, and 20% leadership and community service. The University Athletics Committe votes to select the award winners. Frye holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.75, and Ostrom a 3.90.
"We are extremely proud of our scholar-athletes who have worked hard to develop ways to balance textbooks and playbooks," said Student-Athlete Services Director Alison Ruff. "Our academic support team in Student-Athlete Services feels fortunate to work with these talented students and enjoys celebrating their accomplishments! Tonight we honor 134 student-athletes who have been named to the Eagle Honor Roll for 2013 and are exceeding expectations both in the classroom and on their respective fields of competition."
