Eagle alumni win tickets and hotel stay for game at Georgia Tech
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern alumni Adam Pace (2011) and Jared Brown (2012) took home the grand prize winning with 36 percent of the fan vote in the inaugural Tailgate Cook-off Saturday. Pace and Brown, registered as "True Blue Barbeque" served up "Fatties," a cheeseburger wrapped in a lattice of bacon, mountain oysters and Boston butt.
Both Eagle fans, Pace and Brown won four tickets to the Georgia Southern vs. Georgia Tech game with a hotel night stay in Atlanta.
Calories don't count at tailgates, and fans flocked to the Tailgate Cook-off Zone to sample the contestants' fare and vote on their favorites by purchasing a $2 wristband. Judging and tasting began at 10 a.m., but the cooking, barbequing and nurturing of the morsels for many of the culinary hopefuls started the night before. Pace and Brown constructed a custom cooker last weekend in preparation for the trial by fire.
"There were a lot of firsts today – the first chance for our fans to see the progress at Paulson Stadium, the first spring game for Coach Fritz and our first Tailgate Cook-off," said Associate Athletics Director for External Operations Gleen Hart. "Based on the turnout today for our first Tailgate Cook-off, by both contestants and judges, we want to make this an annual event and look forward to an even bigger response next year."
The aptly named "Move the Chain Gang" took second place with its prime rib, potatoes and green beans. Headed up by David and Tracy Jaynes, Doc "Move the Chains" Holsonback, Karen and the Colonel, this group will have to figure out how to split up the winnings – an autographed football, Georgia Southern fan pack, two tickets, two field passes and two concessions vouchers for an upcoming 2014 home game.
In a close race, "Smokin' Eagles," and team captain Austin Taylor will receive two tickets to a Georgia Southern home football game and two concessions vouchers. The
"Smokin' Eagles" entered pork tenderloin and chicken dishes and hot dogs.
