STATESBORO, Ga. – The Langston Chapel library served as a fitting headquarters for "Real Men Read" Day on Friday as men from all professions volunteered to spend time reading aloud to area schoolchildren. Georgia Southern Eagle coaches and student-athletes spent part of their day at the Bulloch County elementary school as the popular program is now in its 16th year.
"We invite men and boys from all over the community to come read to our children and Georgia Southern is a huge part of that," said Karen Doty, Ph.D., principal of Langston Chapel Elementary School. "The Athletic Department comes out, many clubs on campus come out, and it helps our kids to see these young me still loving to read and still loving to read to kids.
The interior of Langston Chapel was decorated with themed posters and bulletin boards to tie into the celebration of the birthday of Theodore Geisel, otherwise known as children's author Dr. Seuss. Langston Chapel, along with schools nationwide, collaborate with "Read Across America Day ," to encourage the love of reading no matter what the age.
"It (today) is very meaningful to our children," Doty said. "They (the readers) shared with me that it also means a lot to them, to be able to share their love of reading and for them to remember that they were in first grade at one time. They show our children that reading is really cool and it is something we do all of our lives. We couldn't have an event like this today without our community."
Coaches and student-athletes from Football and Men's Soccer participated in today's event, reading to as many classrooms and children as possible. The Eagles also took time to answer questions about going to school at Georgia Southern and playing or coaching in their sports.
