Eagles post 12 personal best times on day one in Tallahassee
Sherril McFarlane's record-breaking performance in the 1500m at FSU Relays
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sherril McFarlane, who already owns two Georgia Southern indoor records, began adding her name to the outdoor list Friday at FSU Relays with a 4:41.09 time in the 1500 meter race. McFarlane finished 10th among collegiate competitors, broke the five-year-old record and trimmed more than half a second off her personal best time.
The Eagles had a successful first day at the FSU Relays with 12 personal bests, two event victories and six top-eight finishes. In her first collegiate outdoor competition in the 400 meter Dash, freshman Asha Stegall tied for the third-fastest time in Georgia Southern history with a 55.62. Stegall matched the time from Ashley Bush-Hardy's 2009 All-SoCon performance.
"Getting a lot of PRs (personal records) and two wins, today was a great confidence boost, especially as we got into our key events," said Head Coach Marlo Mincey. "We would love to have more PRs tomorrow, especially if the weather cooperates, and we can really take advantage of this great facility."
Junior Stephanne Henzler got the Eagles off to the right start in the Hammer Throw with the top mark in the very first event. Henzler, who had her personal best in the season opener earlier this month, threw for 45.71m (150'0"). Junior Jasmin Walker, who has won four conference titles in the Long Jump, claimed the title in Tallahassee with her personal best of 5.99m (19'8"). That distance ties her for fifth all-time on the University's performance list.
All five Eagles entered in the 100m Hurdles came away with personal best times led by Dana Edwards with a top-10 finish with a 14.73. Lauren Toomer, running into the wind during her heat, posted a 14.75. Alyssa Felton, Ashleigh Rasheed and Deanna Edwards all finished the race with the best time of their careers at this event.
Henzler also set a personal best in the Javelin with Sadia Yansenah (400m) and Kelsey Arnold (Discus) adding to the list of Eagle PRs Friday.
Twenty-four college teams return and several Olympians arrive to compete in events on day two at the Mike Long Track. The Eagles' first event is the 200m Dash with heats set to begin at 12:15 p.m. with the Triple Jump at 1 p.m.
