Perfect weather forecasted for annual event at Mike Long Track
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern makes the first of its three trips to the state of Florida beginning with the Florida State Relays this Friday and Saturday, March 21st-22nd. The meet gets underway at 9 a.m. Friday with Hammer Throw and the first racing event, the 4x100m Relay, set to go off at 1 p.m. Results for this weekend's meet will be available HERE.
Traditionally the Eagles have posted some of their top performances of the year at the Mike Long Track and Coach Mincey hopes this weekend is no different. The Eagles opened the outdoor season March 7 to less than ideal weather in Charleston, S.C., but still posted solid performances. Stephanne Henzler made the most of her Eagle outdoor debut at the Palmetto Classic with the fifth-best distance in the Hammer throw (47.51m, 155'10"), adding almost seven meters to her previous personal best.
"We have done pretty well at this meet and if the weather cooperates, we hope to see some fast times," said Head Track and Field Coach Marlo Mincey. "Every time we line up we want to show what we can do. We have more depth in the outdoor events and we've seen a lot of people step up to the challenges. We feel like any one of our student-athletes can step up and be number one on any given day."
Beautiful weather is forecasted for Tallahassee and Georgia Southern, with at least a dozen expected entries in the sprint events, will use this opportunity for veterans Dana Edwards, Deanna Edwards and Lauren Toomer to compete in hurdles events. Alyssa Felton, who raced in her first outdoor hurdles event at the Palmetto Classic, will compete in both the 100m and 400m Hurdles with Dana and Deanna Edwards.
Graduate transfer student Sherril McFarlane will compete in the 1,500m event as part of the Distance Showcase Friday afternoon. It will be McFarlane's first 1,500m race since she competed last spring at the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships where she set a personal best of 4:41.41. McFarlane is slated to run the second leg of the Eagles' top 4X400m Relay team with Dana Edwards, Kimberly Thomas and Asha Stegall.
Sophomore Ashleigh Rasheed will compete in all three jumps events and she'll be joined by Camryn Coleman in the Triple Jump and Long Jump. Four Eagles total look to. Rasheed expects to improve in the Javelin as a way to score even higher in her multi-events later this season.
Georgia Southern's indoor record holder in the Weight Throw, freshman Kelsey Arnold has three events on her list this weekend beginning with the Hammer Throw Friday morning, Shot Put Friday evening and Discus on Saturday. Henzler, also entered in the Hammer and Discus, adds javelin to her repertoire.
