Eighteen Eagles to compete in two-day meet
Coach's Corner with Track & Field Coach Marlo Mincey -- 2-7-2014
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Track and Field team will be included on the invitation list with 40 teams will competing this weekend at the Samford Multi and Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. This will be the Eagles' third trip to the Birmingham Crossplex with 18 women competing in events beginning with the Weight Throw Friday morning. The Pentathlon events follow with a short slate of racing events Friday night. A full schedule of events is available in PDF here and live results will be available at timinginc.com.
The Eagles are getting into their race rhythm at this point in the season and corrections have been made in practices, but Head Track & Field Coach Marlo Mincey wants her team to hit their times and marks consistently.
"I'm really looking for consistency and doing everything we can to quality for the finals of our races," said Coach Mincey. "We know what we're capable of but we need to be more consistent, get more reps and races, and be at the top of our game every weekend."
Fourteen personal bests were set at the Bob Pollock Classic at Clemson last weekend with graduate student Sherril McFarlane's personal best 56.04 time in the 400m placed her second all-time in Eagle program history. Jasmin Walker ran a 7.62, also a personal best for the No. 4 time on that Georgia Southern list. Ashleigh Rasheed, with her personal best in the Triple Jump (11.88m) and top-five points total in the Pentathlon, combined with a 4.0 cumulative GPA, was named the North Carolina Education Lottery Student-Athlete of the Week by the Southern Conference.
Georgia Southern also made strikes in the 4x400m Relay, recording the best time of the season at 3:50.07. With that time last weekend, the Eagles are also within striking distance of one of the top three times in the record book.
"We did pretty well last week, but I want to see the same performances this week, or at a higher level," Mincey said. "If we follow the same race plan as we did last year and now if we do it with a little more aggression behind it, I'll be happy."
