Eagles Head to Indianapolis Later This Month to Interact with NFL Teams
NEW YORK – Georgia Southern Eagles Jerick McKinnon and Lavelle Westbrooks have invitations to the NFL Scouting Combine and will travel to Indianapolis later this month for the league's annual prospect evaluation. Workouts at Lucas Oil Stadium begin Saturday, February 22nd through Tuesday, February 25th. McKinnon, listed as a running back, will join his position group for physicals and then drills on Sunday, February 23rd and Westbrooks will participate in drills with the last group, the defensive backs, on the final day.
The NFL Scouting Combine allows executives, coaches, scouts and physicians from all 32 teams to interact with individual players and assess their potential as members of their respective organizations. Approximately 300 collegiate players are invited to participate at the NFL Scouting Combine and this is the first time in program history that two Eagles have been invited to the event.
During what is described as the "intense, four-day job interview" in advance of the NFL Draft in May, the itinerary for the annual event includes six physical tests: 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle run, 225-lb. bench press, vertical jump, broad jump and three-cone drill. In addition to the physical tests, the Eagles will undergo evaluations of "non-physical capabilities" with the traditional Wonderlic and new cognitive test introduced in 2013, and may conduct interviews with individual teams.
Both McKinnon and Westbrooks played in the Reese's Senior Bowl last month and gained attention for their performances during the week of workouts before NFL teams. Westbrooks was selected by Fox Sports as the best cover corner and McKinnon's power was evident, and worthy of social media commentary, when he plowed through a defender in practice.
Last year, Eagle J.J. Wilcox became Georgia Southern's highest-ever NFL draft pick with his selection in the third round by the Dallas Cowboys. He was listed as a top performer at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine in the 40-yard dash and the 20-yard shuttle.
