All-Conference selection helped Eagles to nation’s top rushing average in each of last three years
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Garrett Frye, an offensive tackle for Georgia Southern, received an invitation to the Medal of Honor Bowl and has accepted the opportunity to play in the Saturday, January 10, 2015, senior all-star game. The second annual contest will be held at Johnson Hagood Stadium in Charleston, S.C., with kickoff at 2 p.m. Frye joins several of the nation's top draft eligible college football players for the game named to celebrate the brave men and women of our nation's military. Frye will be assigned to either the "American" or "National" team play for either of two legendary coaches Willie Jeffries or Chan Gailey. Practice begins on January 5th with Frye and teammate Edwin Jackson reporting for camp the previous day.
"Receiving this invitation to play in the Medal of Honor Bowl has been an honor and a blessing," said Garrett Frye, from Cumming, Georgia, and South Forsyth High School. "With family members who have served in the armed forces, being able to participate in this game and raise awareness for those men and women who are facing battles after they have served is a privilege. I never would have expected coming to Georgia Southern that I'd have the opportunity to start as a sophomore and now, to play in a senior all-star game, and possibly play professional football. I am grateful to Coach Monken, Coach Fritz, and all of my coaches for helping me get to this point today."
During his Georgia Southern career, Frye has been recognized for his achievements both on and off the field. A Capital One second team academic All-American and two-time all-district member, he has represented the Eagles as the University's male student-athlete of the year for two years. Frye was named to the Sun Belt Conference first team offense by the league and media outlets this season after also earning national recognition in previous seasons. The three-year starter on the Georgia Southern offensive line helped the Eagles to the highest team rushing average in the nation in each of those three years, including a 381.1 yards per game average in 2014.
