Eagles continue to roll up offensive numbers while defense holds opponents back

It's been more than a minute since Georgia Southern and Texas State last met with the two programs both recently making the move to FBS and to the Sun Belt Conference. The Eagles make their first trip to play in the state of Texas since the last contest between the two schools in 2005 with that NCAA playoff game as the only previous meeting. Coach Willie Fritz owns a 2-0 record as a head coach against the Bobcats with wins in 2010 and 2011, both coming during his tenure at Sam Houston State.

Taking possession of the ball after a fumble on the opening kickoff following the efforts of special forces teammates Matt Dobson and Rayquan Sam, the Eagles scored their fastest touchdown of the year, just 1:34 into the game against Troy.

Coming back for the 2014 season after missing all of 2013, junior linebacker Antwione Williams had only two tackles for loss in his career – one each in 2011 and 2012. This season Williams is leading the team with seven of the Eagles' 56 total and has three sacks.

Georgia Southern's offense is putting up numbers AND points, but the Eagle defense is doing its part and held Troy to only nine first downs and forced the Trojan's into six three-and-out situations in Thursday night's game. The Eagles allowed the Trojans a season-low 154 yards of total offense.

Sophomore running back Matt Breida's 1,104 rushing yards total in 2014 is good for 16th on the Eagles' single-season chart with Roderick Russell just ahead in the No. 15 (1,172-1997) and No. 14 (1,238-1998) spots on that list. He currently ranks sixth on the sophomore list for rushing yards in a season.

Georgia Southern is ranked sixth nationally with a scoring margin of 23.5 points per game, bolstered in part by a +88 in third-quarter scoring (109-21, ranked 2nd) and +56 in first-quarter scoring (93-37, ranked T-8th). The Eagles are +35 in the second period and +33 in the fourth quarter, giving up 65 points in each.

Georgia Southern recorded its highest time of possession of the 2014 season against the Trojans Thursday night at 38:43, keeping the ball for more than 10:00 in both the second (10:42) and third (10:43) quarters. The Eagles last went over the 40-minute mark in 2012.

Only two teams averaged more points, the 1999 team (50.0 ppg) and 2004 team (47.0 ppg). The 1998 squad was the only other team have a scoring average above 40 points per contest. Of that list, postseason games were only included for the 2004 team.

Ten of 13 on third down conversions for a 76.9 percentage against Troy, the Eagles posted their second-best single-game performance in that category after going 6-6 against Savannah State earlier this year. Georgia Southern was 8-9 in the first half against the Trojans and converted eight-straight situations.

The last time the Eagles recorded more than 500 yards of offense per game was in 1999 (551.7), also the last time a team averaged more than seven yards of total offense per play (7.6 in 1999).

Already surpassing last year's passing yards total (1,002) with 1,036 in 2014, the Eagles have connected 66 times on 111 attempts, both also ahead of the 2013 totals. Georgia Southern's per-game average of 115.1 yards per game is the highest by an Eagle option team since 2004.
