Award recognizes top assistant coach in the nation
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Georgia Southern Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Doug Ruse is among the 40 nominees for the 2014 Broyles Award to honor the nation's top assistant college football coach. The Broyles Award, established in 1996 to honor legendary Arkansas Head Coach Frank Broyles, is presented by The Rotary Club of Little Rock and Delta Dental. Coach Broyles had a track record of producing some of the most successful assistant coaches in college football history.
"I'm really happy for Doug, there's no question he does an excellent job as an offensive coordinator, and a super job leading our offensive staff," said Eagle Head Coach Willie Fritz. "He would be the first to tell you this is a total team honor. I'm excited about what he does for us at Georgia Southern."
The Eagles, with an 8-3 record and 7-0 mark in Sun Belt Conference play, own the nation's top per-game rushing average at 385.5 yards per game, a spot they have held for nine-straight weeks. Among the single-game superlatives, Georgia Southern has posted the second- and fourth-best single-game rushing totals this season with 613 and 564, respectively. Numerous top-25 statistical weekly rankings have been achieved, including a No. 9 ranking in scoring offense, with the Eagles averaging 40.5 points per game, and a No. 15 ranking in total offense.
The 2014 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, December 9th in Little Rock, Arkansas. Last year's winner was Pat Narduzzi of Michigan State.
The Broyles Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 21 awards boast 678 years of tradition-selection excellence.
