Award honors outstanding player who began career as a walk-on
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Georgia Southern senior linebacker Edwin Jackson has been nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, presented by the Springdale (Ark.) Rotary Club, to honor the collegiate player who began their career as a walk-on and who has shown outstanding performance on the field. The Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas walk-on and All-America offensive lineman. Jackson is one of 55 student-athletes nationally on the list for consideration.
Jackson, a two-year starter for the Eagles, has led the team in tackles in each of the last two seasons. This season, he has had four games with double-digit tackles, including a career best 14 at New Mexico State, and recorded his first career interception at South Alabama. His 82 tackles this season rank him sixth in the Sun Belt Conference and 80th nationally.
The Atlanta, Ga., native from Westlake High School, chose Georgia Southern at the recommendation of his older brother and he decided to try out for the Eagle Football team. He joined the Eagles as a scout team member in 2010 and was invited to preseason camp in 2011. He made a statement in 2013 as with a game-high 10 tackles in the Eagles' win over Florida in "The Swamp."
Georgia Southern's seniors will be honored prior to the final home game vs. ULM on November 29th. Tickets for that game are available for purchase online at GSEagles.com/tickets.
