Pittsburg State alumni Fritz and Franchione square off for first time
NEW ORLEANS – The game time for Georgia Southern's Saturday, November 8th contest at Texas State has been set for 4 p.m., as announced today. The Sun Belt Conference matchup, which features the first-ever Sun Belt Conference meeting between Head Coaches Willie Fritz and Dennis Franchione. both Pittsburg State graduates, will be available for viewing on ESPN3.
Fritz, a four-year letterwinner at Pittsburg State at defensive back, and a basketball player for the Gorillas, spent eight years as a collegiate head coach in Texas, four at Blinn College (1993-1996), winning two national championships, and four at Sam Houston State (2010-13), where he took the Bearkats to back-to-back title games and three-straight playoff appearances.
Franchione became the head coach of Pittsburg State in 1985, two years after Fritz graduated. He took over the reins of Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) after five years as the coach of the Gorillas.
For the Eagles, this is the first game in the state of Texas since a 2005 playoff game against the Bobcats.
