Teammates Codina Sala and Kerrigan Win “A” Flight Doubles
Statesboro, Ga. – The final day of competition at the Georgia Southern Championships proved to be a great one for the host Eagles. The tandem of Albert Codina Sala and Christian Kerrigan went a perfect 3-0 for the tournament to claim victory in the "A" Flight Doubles. Today, the duo topped Valencia/Castellanos of Kennesaw State 8-5 to preserve the flawless record.
"Codina Sala and Kerrigan put together a solid weekend in doubles. Overall I was really happy with how aggressive we were in the doubles, especially returning," commented Head Coach Nick Zieziula. "We created a lot of opportunities to cross over the middle which is going to help us down the road."
Also competing in "A" Flight Doubles, teammates Nico de Groof and Jose Eduardo Landin Lopez got the win over Meade/Acob of Florida Atlantic 8-2 to improve to 1-2 for the tournament.
Landin finished 2nd in "A" Flight Singles going 2-2 for the tournament. Today, Landin fell to David Durham of Kennesaw State 0-6, 3-6. Teammate Codina Sala also went 2-2 in the tournament but finished 4th in the "A" Flight based on set and game differential. Codina Sala was defeated by Florida Atlantic's Zandrix Acob 2-6, 4-6 on the final day.
In "D" Flight Singles, Casablancas finished an unblemished 4-0 in the tournament but finished 2nd in the flight on differential. Casablancas dispatched Joshua Tewes-McCoy of SCAD in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Thompson finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and dominated Theo Gough of SCAD today 6-0, 6-1 to finish 4th in the "E" flight.
De Groof was defeated by Florida Atlantic's Kian Mclean 0-6, 3-6 and fell to 0-4 for the tournament in the "B" flight. Teammate Pradeep Raja lost to Trey Nickerson of Florida Atlantic 0-6, 6-3, 2-6 to finish the tournament 0-4 in the "C" flight.
"For the weekend we made some good progress in singles. We didn't make some key adjustments fast enough in some singles matches on Sunday and that prevented us from taking a few more W's," concluded Zieziula.
The Eagles will now take a two week break before returning for the Georgia Southern Round Robins November 7-9th at the Wallis Tennis Center.
