STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Georgia Southern Track and Field team will travel to Clemson this weekend for the Bob Pollack Classic Friday and Saturday, January 31st-February 1st. Twenty-three teams will be in attendance at the meet at the Clemson Indoor Complex with 20 events on the program with both preliminaries and finals for several running events. Friday's events for the women begin with the 60m Hurdles for the Pentathlon at 10:30 a.m. and the High Jump at 11:15 a.m. Live results will be available at http://timinginc.com.
The Eagles have traditionally posted some of the program's best efforts at Clemson meets and Head Coach Marlo Mincey is hoping this week is no different.
"We always want to run fast, have excellent performances and see some of the technical events come together," said Coach Mincey. "We work hard during the week to see those outcomes in our meets. Some of our Eagles who haven't had an opportunity to get into their major events in a while will be competing this weekend, so were looking forward to that too."
Among the highlights for the Eagles at the 2014 Bob Pollack Classic meet is the first Pentathlon competition for sophomore Ashleigh Rasheed after participating in open events so far this year. She scored points for Georgia Southern in last year's conference championships and her total was good for a spot in the career top five in that event.
Georgia Southern will have only two more weekends to prepare for its last Southern Conference Indoor Championships set for March 1st-2nd, at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Eagles currently have 16 performances in 10 events that rank among the league's top eight. Included in that number is the 800m Run time by graduate student Sherril McFarlane which ranks as the best in the conference so far this year.
"This weekend is really our last opportunity to see what we can fix now before championships and get in another training cycle and implement what we can before then."
The polar vortex has played havoc with weather in Statesboro in the last week or so with Coach Mincey using the arena at Hanner Fieldhouse creatively to make sure the Eagles had quality practice time.
"The weather here – or anywhere in the South this past week was not ideal, but it will be good enough for us to go outside today (Thursday) and go over the pre-meet the way we need to," Mincey said. "We'll have to take the good and the bad, we may be a little more rested and should get some pretty good results."
