Jelani Hewitt leads the Eagles with 13 points
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Georgia Southern's final trip to Belk Arena was a forgettable affair as the Eagles dropped a 82-52 decision to the Wildcats. The Eagles will look to snap a three-game skid on Thursday at home against The Citadel at 7 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
"We did what we wanted to do in the first few minutes of the game. We got the right shots and forced Davidson into playing our way, but things really changed after about four minutes," said Head Coach Mark Byington. "One thing that hurt us was we didn't make the perimeter shots early. Because of that, the lanes didn't open for us to drive the ball through and get inside looks like we wanted."
The Eagles (9-12, 2-4 SoCon) sprung out to a quick 4-0 lead, but the situation deteriorated from there. Jelani Hewitt led the Eagles with 13 points while Tre Bussey added 11 to the cause.
De'Mon Brooks and Brian Sullivan shared top-scoring honors for the Wildcats (10-11, 6-1 SoCon) with 21 points each. In total, five Davidson players scored in double figured with Jake Belford and Tom Droney adding 11, followed by Tyler Kalinoski with 10.
Freshman Torlorf Thomas scored a career-best seven points in 11 minutes of work on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from the field and 1-of-1 at the charity stripe. Marvin Baynham pulled five offensive boards and led the squad with eight total boards. Overall, GS was out-rebounded 46-26.
Davidson was red hot shooting the ball in the first half, making 17-of-27 at a 63% clip to post 53 points in the opening stanza. For the game, Davidson was 10-of-22 from downtown against the Eagles 3-for-15 showing from the bonusphere. For the game, Georgia Southern shot 33% from the field and 20% from beyond the arc.
Next up for the Eagles is a home date with The Citadel on Thursday night at Hanner Fieldhouse. The contest starts at 7 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
