Beene Selected to Texas Tennis Hall of Fame

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Cathy Beene has been selected for induction for the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame.

Beene was one of four selections for the class of 2013 and joins Bobby Kleinecke, Kathy Langer and Ken McAllister.

"It is a huge honor to get this kind of recognition from my peers," said Beene. "I'm just thankful for all the support and sacrifices that my family, as well as my high school coach Jerry Hirst and Pat Park, my college coach, made in order for me to be successful. I don't look at this as just an honor for myself, but for all the mentors that I've had along the way."


The induction banquet will be held in Waco, Texas on Nov. 16, 2013 at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. The reception will last from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and the dinner & banquet will begin at 7:30 p.m.

A native of Kingsville, Texas, Beene was a member of the Junior Wightman Cup Team from 1967-1969 and was ranked #1 in Texas 18 and under in 1969 before joining the Lamar University women's tennis team. At Lamar University, Beene was an All-America selection and won the USTA-AIAW National Tennis Doubles Championship in 1973.


After college, she turned professional and played on the Avon Professional Circuit from 1977-78. Beene started her coaching career by leading the Texas Jr. Wightman Cup Team from 1974-1979.
Beene has since taught at three different tennis clubs in Texas and has coached tennis at four universities: the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Houston, the University of Texas at Arlington and Georgia Southern University.  She has coached five All-America athletes and was the Coach of the Year in the Southwest Conference in 1990 and the Southern Conference in 1998.


Beene has also worked as an athletic administrator for over twenty years investing her time and efforts in the development of student-athletes. Beene served twice as the chair of the Men's and Women's NCAA Tennis Committee and was a committee member on the Men's and Women's NCAA Committee from 1991-1997 and again in 2008-2012. Beene is also a member of the Lamar University Athletic Hall of Honor (1993) and the Rio Grande Valley Hall of Fame (2012).
