Chester Webb Named to Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

Former Georgia Teachers College star is one of eight members of Class of 2014

MACON, GA. – Chester Webb, a star basketball player for Georgia Teachers College, has been named to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2014. A native of Elberton, Ga., Webb was the first native Georgian to be named a college basketball All-American.

Chester played between 1952 and 1956 and is the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,542 career points. In 1956 as a senior, Webb scored 883 points at an average of 30.5 points per game for the best season in school history. For his career, Webb scored 24.0 ppg.

Webb possesses school career records for field goals made (883), free throws made (776) and rebounds (1,685). He tops the single-season list in field goals made (291), free throws made (301) and rebounds (524). Chester holds the school's mark record for consecutive free throws made in a game (21) and season (31).

He authored six of Georgia Southern's top-10 individual scoring games, including a pair of 47-point efforts against Piedmont on Jan. 23, 1956 and Feb. 18, 1956. Webb also scored 45 vs. Stetson on Dec. 1, 1955.

Webb was a First Team NAIA All-American in 1955 and was a Second Team NAIA All-American in 1956.

In 1956 after his senior season, Webb was picked in the NBA Draft by the Syracuse Nationals. Chester, however, chose to serve in the U.S. Army.

In 1959, Chester Webb was inducted into the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame and he was on hand to see his number 22 retired on January 30, 2010.

Webb is joined in the Class of 2014 by James Brooks, Bobby Cremins, Jim Hughes, Homer Rice, Hollis Stacy, Frank Thomas and Scott Woerner.
