PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Sports Network today released its 2013 preseason poll with media members and sports information directors across the ranking Georgia Southern ninth. The Eagles received 2,002 points and a first-place vote. North Dakota State, last year's NCAA FCS champion, earned the top spot in the preseason poll with 3,340 points and 127 first-place votes. Montana State was ranked second and Sam Houston State third with Eastern Washington holding the fourth spot and Villanova rounding out the top five.
In 2012, for the third consecutive year, Georgia Southern advanced to the NCAA FCS playoff semifinals, the only team to do so in the last three years. Sam Houston State, North Dakota State and Eastern Washington joined Georgia Southern among the final four teams last year.
Georgia Southern, in its first transition year from FCS to FBS, is eligible to be ranked in the Sports Network poll throughout this season. The Eagles return seven starters each on offense and defense, including Walter Payton Award candidate Jerick McKinnon and All-American Dominique Swope. The backfield combination set an NCAA record for most yards by teammates in a single season with 3,063 last year.
