MACON, Ga. - Georgia Southern Head Football Coach Jeff Monken kicked off an exciting week in the football program by speaking to media from around the state who gathered at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame for the 2013 Pigskin Preview.
Monken spoke about the upcoming season, the move to the Sun Belt Conference and the Allen E. Paulson Stadium expansion just a day before the ground breaking for the new Football Operations Center and stadium seat expansion. The ground breaking will be held on the field at Paulson Stadium at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Monken talked to the press about the goals and motivation for the upcoming season."We have pride in the last 30 years and what Erk Russell built to play for. We do get to play the same eight Southern Conference teams that we played each of the last three years. We have yet to go 8-0 in the Southern Conference since I have been here. That has always been a goal of ours, and it will be again."
"To be able to move to the highest level in college football, play in a great Sun Belt Conference, renew some old rivalries and start some new ones is an exciting day in our history," Monken said about the move to the FBS subdivision. "We are excited about that, but our focus is on this season and having the best season we can. We owe it to Georgia Southern and the history of this program to have the best season we can in 2013."
Georgia Southern was represented along with every college football program in the state of Georgia at the annual preseason media event.
